When it comes time to choose furnishings for a space, many people’s impulses may lead them to consider things like color, material, form, and comfort. While all of these factors are indeed important and should not be overlooked, they are not the first things one should consider. Before rushing out to the furniture store, take into consideration the size of your space.
“Never overlook the power of scale and proportion,” our designers advise. “Take serious note of what your space can reasonably and attractively fit.” If your shoebox prewar apartment will look overstuffed with that sectional you’ve been eyeing—fear not! You might just find that four armchairs will look better and function just as well.
