Andrew McLaughlin’s downtown duplex—which features cathedral-like ceilings, copious natural light and a open, loft-like layout—is highly coveted in New York’s ever competitive real estate market. The space was also recently featured in House Beautiful

But for the art-loving financial advisor, the newly purchased space needed a drastic upgrade. A cavernous master bedroom and cramped bathrooms were certainly not representative of the couple’s stylish, jet-setting lifestyle.

McLaughlin enlisted Decor Aid, a revolutionary interior design firm, to plan the gutting of the space, in addition to completing the interior design. The space needed to be both comfortable and highly functional, as the owners work from home.

While they don’t use the stove too often, the couple loves to entertain, and sought convenient walkways throughout the house. And nothing could get in the way of the true king of the castle: Harper, a 10-year-old bulldog.

A contemporary, sleek and pet-friendly space was created over the course of the next eight months.

By gutting the kitchen and bathrooms, Decor Aid was able to create contemporary, streamlined designs with a black-and-white palette. To create a punchy floor statement, cement tiles were placed in the kitchen, while the rest of the loft received newly polished wood floors.

To give more light to the master bedroom, a large, internal window, introducing natural light into a previously drab space. To give the space a more industrial feel, the fireplace was refinished with cement and iron, in addition to the staircase’s iron railing.

Entirely new furnishings were selected to outfit the space. A custom-made walnut wood bar provides a multi-functional space, which can serve as a bar, a buffet or as storage.

Lindsey Adelman lighting, dining chairs from Vitra and carpeting from Tom Dixon were add for a chic, masculine edge. A custom-made section with Kravet fabric is sturdy enough for Harper, and comfortable enough for binge-watching television.
