10 Fall Getaways from New York City

Woodstock in new york

As much as we love New York City, it isn’t the greatest place in the world to see the leaves changing color when fall rolls around. If you’re looking to rejuvenate yourself with a little bit of nature before the busy holiday season, consider getting away from the city for a weekend. Between Metro North, Amtrak, and the Long Island Railroad, there are plenty of options for getting a breather from the big apple, even if you don’t have a car.

Hudson, New York

The entire Hudson Valley is beautiful this time of year, and the city of Hudson is a great launching-off point for exploring this part of upstate New York. Located a two-hour train ride north of Manhattan, Hudson is full of galleries, restaurants, and bars that are on par with any you’ll find in New York City. If you’re looking for an escape from city life without sacrificing the comforts of home, Hudson is a no-brainer.

If you missed going to the Hampton during the summer months, consider heading east for a fall getaway. It might be too cold to go in the water, but the beaches will be nearly empty, and perfect for some needed solitude.

The younger, hipper cousin to the Hamptons, Montauk is situated on the eastern tip of Long Island, which can feel like the edge of the world for some New Yorkers. But don’t be fooled, there are plenty of options for shopping, dining, and hiking in and around this beachside getaway.

Saratoga Springs, New York

In New York State, the fall season means turning freshly picked apples into cider, juice, or pies. Saratoga Springs is a perfect jumping-off point for the surrounding area’s apple picking, hay rides, and corn mazes. But if you’re looking for a little more excitement than your typical hay ride, head over to the Saratoga Race track, and bet the ponies against this scenic fall backdrop. Giddy up!
