How to Decorate a Nursery

Rachael Ross, MD, the warm, genuine family physician and sexologist known for co-hosting the CBS show The Doctors, is expecting a baby girl any day now. She was gracious enough to share a sneak peek of her daughter’s nursery, in her Chicago home, with Woman’s Day. The room’s reveal was a surprise, caught on camera for an episode of the show. Scroll down to see why Ross says she’s “over-the-moon happy” with the results.

Before Dr. Ross found out she was expecting, she planned on turning this guest room into a space for her niece, whose mother, Ross’s sister, passed away. “I thought she’d be spending more time here,” says Ross. “I painted the room and bought a nice chandelier but every time I walked into the room, I had no idea what to do with it.”

If her sister were here today, Ross says, she’d be helping decorate the nursery. So bringing on interior-design service Decor Aid “took a huge burden off of my shoulders,” she says. Decor Aid’s team took Ross’s personal style, which she describes as eclectic — “You could spend two hours in my living room and still not see everything” — and translated it into something appropriate for a baby girl.

Ross wanted the room to be clean and simple, without a lot of things that could collect dust. Her design team used Benjamin Moore Natura in Mellow Pink, an allergy friendly, zero-VOC paint. “It was great because the house never had that paint smell,” says Ross.

Chicago baby boutique Twinkle Twinkle Little One provided the furniture and accessories and Lauren Cotter of Laurenish Design created the custom “Dream” banner.

Designers added pops of what Ross calls “muted bling”: a silver Moroccan side table, metallic pull handles for the closet door, and glass hardware for the dresser.

Ross wanted to instill a sense of strength and pride in her daughter, so she asked designers to create custom art around lyrics from the Black American National Anthem. “It’s a song that keeps us in touch with our heritage; the lyrics are words that brought us through slavery and the Civil Rights era. I want her to know that, and to dream big,” says Ross, also referring to the “Dream” banner over the crib.

“It’s kind of selfish but my favorite part o the room is the glider. As soon as I sat in in, I thought, this chair is amazing,” says Ross. “It brings clean, modern lines to the room: a nice visual contrast to the traditional crib.” (The chair, by Dutailier, has a built-in footrest and motorized reclining function.)
