2017 is almost over, which means that New Year’s Eve is upon us! Whether you’re looking to celebrate or forget about the past 12 months, throwing a party is a great way to bring in the new year. Forgo glitter or anything else that’s hard to clean, and hopefully, you won’t have too much to mop up when 2018 rolls around.

Stock Your Bar

You don’t want to spend your whole evening filling up other people’s champagne glasses. Stock your home bar beforehand, so that your guests can fix themselves a cocktail, or pour themselves a glass of wine.

Check out the walnut bar that we incorporated into this Upper East Side brownstone.

Take a cue from Andy Warhol’s “Balloon Room” piece and fill up your space with as many balloons as humanly possible. It’ll add a festive vibe that’s a lot easier to clean up than glitter.

Bust Out the Gold

gold home decorations

Gold accessories are a New Year’s Eve classic, but can easily clash with your existing furniture. For an easy way to incorporate gold into your New Year’s Eve party, try adding a few accents to your dining table. It’s a great way to add a celebratory flare without letting one color take over the entire house.

A good place to start is this Painted Metallic Table Runner from West Elm.

Or Go for Chrome

If gold doesn’t quite suit your fancy, you can always go with chrome accents. For a bit of inspiration, check out the chrome accents we placed in the foyer of this Upper East Side luxury condo.

Get the Fire Goin’

If you have a working fireplace hopefully, you’ve had your chimney swept by now. As the clock approaches midnight, and as this year comes to a close, make sure the fire is as roarin’ as your party.

Check out the fireplace we incorporated into the living room of this SoHo duplex.

Countdown Decor

A bit of international flare is always fun for a New Years Eve party. If you have some quests that hail from other parts of the world, consider adding some clocks with time zones for global cities. You and your guests can celebrate when the clock strikes twelve over and over again.

decorating with candles new years eve

Candles, candles, candles everywhere. On the mantle, on the shelf, in the fireplace: make sure every available inch of space has candles. For a sleek, modern vibe, go for a monochromic look with one kind of candle. Mix it up if you’re looking for something that’s a bit more shabby chic.

Get Everyone Else to Bring Drinks

You can take care of the food, but get your guests to bring a few bottles of wine and champaign. Ask each person to bring as much alcohol as they plan on drinking, and then supply a few extra bottles of bubbly, just in case.

Tiered Trays

If you’re trying to throw a New Year’s Eve party in a space that poses a challenge for two, consider serving food on tiered trays. It’ll save space for more important things, like champaign.

If All Else Fails, Just Stay In

how to stay in on new years eve

Having guests over can be a great time, but it can also be a hassle. After this past year, nobody is going to judge you for staying in by yourself on New Year’s Eve. Pop a couple of bottles with a close friend or significant other, and pray together that 2018 will bring us all better fortunes.
