Design Guides

smooth redesign budget

Everyone deserves to come home to a beautiful space. And whether you’re considering a full-on gut renovation or a quick touch up, it’s important to plan ahead, so that all goes according to plan, and so that your project stays under budget. Our senior designers have these 8 tips for a smooth redesign.

Scope

Before you spend a penny on your redesign, have a general idea of what you’re trying to achieve. Which rooms are you trying to change? Are you looking for a full-scale remodel or just a quick touch-up? Answering these questions before you sit down with an interior designer or contractor will help ensure a smooth redesign.

Think About How You’ll Be Using the Space

In the redesign process, it can be easy to focus exclusively on beautiful furniture pieces and bespoke materials. But remember, your home has to be functional as well. What are your daily routines? How often do you cook? Where do you relax and unwind? How much privacy do you need from the people you share your home with? Answering these sorts of questions can be a huge help when considering the functionality of your space.

 Have a Realistic Budget

Budget is of the upmost importance when redesigning your home. And to ensure a smooth redesign, have an impartial and knowledgeable third party review your contractor’s budget, so that there aren’t any surprises along the way.

Have an End Goal In Mind

Before you start spending money on contractors and architects, have an end goal in mind. What do you want your space to look like at the end of your redesign? Are you looking for a more modern or contemporary space? Is rustic chic your vibe? Mood boards can be helpful with answering these sorts of questions.

Timeline

A quality home redesign takes some time. And having a realistic timeline for your project is crucial to a smooth redesign. Try to schedule your home redesign to coincide with your schedule. So if it’s a hectic time at work, or if you have a little one on the way, plan accordingly.

Pro-tip: if a part of your home is going to be under construction, then consider planning a vacation during the demolition phase. Skip out on the dust and catch some sun instead!

Storage

If you live in a large city, then chances are your apartment is short on space. In redesigning your home, find ways to combat clutter. In this Upper East Side luxury condo, we placed a built-in storage unit along a windowless wall. The drawers can be used to store clothing, while the open shelves frame the television, effectively creating a media console.

Think About Life’s Next Steps

Your home redesign should last for years to come. Think about where your life is headed, so that your home redesign will still feel fresh and relevant in five years. Our clients in this beach-y Upper East Side getaway are planning to have a child in the coming years. And so we created a home office that can easily be turned into a nursery, when the time comes.
