Interior Design Guide

small bedroom space

As a company based in New York City, we’re frequently faced with the challenge of designing for small spaces. If you have a nook, or a cranny, or an inexplicable appendage in your apartment’s layout, then you may be wondering how to make the most of it. But have no fear. Follow our guide to get the most out of your home’s small spaces.

Bright Walls

If your small space doesn’t receive a ton of natural light, then it can be easy to create a dark and cave-like room. The kitchen in this New York apartment makeover faced this exact issue. And so to combat the lack of natural light, we painted the walls white, sourced a white tile backsplash, and installed high-sheen cabinets. With a few under-the-counter lights, this space went from feeling subterranean to light and airy.

Low-Profile Furniture

One of the cardinal rules of design is to source furniture that’s appropriately sized for your space. And so if you’re trying to decorate a narrow space or a compact nook, then go for slim, low-profile furniture. In the hallway of this Upper West Side family home, we sourced low-profile consoles and stools, to keep the area from feeling cramped or over-crowded.

If you find yourself decorating a room that’s short on space, try to design as symmetrically as possible. A symmetrical design tricks the eye into reading a space as being wider, and more spacious that it actually is. In this Upper East Side apartment remodel, we sourced matching bedside tables with lucite tops, to make this master bedroom feel more expansive.

Turn Your Small Space into a Home Office

If you have an extraneous nook or cranny in your apartment, then consider transforming this space into a home office with a few simple steps. It’s a great way to get your small spaces to work a bit harder for you. In this San Francisco luxury condo, we installed a small shelf and pulled up a chair, for a sleek, space-saving home office.

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

If you’re in the process of decorating a small space, then you might find it difficult to source wall art. Too little adornment, and your space will look bare; too much, and the space can begin to feel cramped. To get the best of both worlds, consider hanging a mirror on the wall. In this Pied-a-Terre, we placed a mirror with a chrome frame above the bed, to keep the walls from feeling bare, while giving the room an expansive feel.

Storage Solutions

One of the easiest ways for your small space to feel bigger is to declutter. And if you don’t want to throw out all of your material possessions, then explore some space saving solutions. In decorating a small space, consider sourcing furniture pieces that can double as storage solutions. In this bright, spacious studio for a young professional, we sourced a bed frame with under-the-bed storage, and selected ottomans that double as storage compartments.
