Shop Talk: Our Designer Favorites from Steven Alan

steve alan's home store

Steven Alan is one of our favorite stores to scout for new, upcoming designers. The eponymous boutique opened in 1994 with a focus on eclectic fashion. Then, just two years ago Steven Alan Home opened in New York’s Tribeca and just this summer, they packed up shop and moved to Brooklyn’s Boreum Hill neighborhood.  The fixtures in the Tribeca store were designed by the New York based design studio, Fort Standard and while some of those pieces made the journey across the East River, the new store is outfitted with pieces custom-made by a local carpenter for the Brooklyn location.

Whether in Manhattan or Brooklyn, the shop is still one of our favorite places to shop for everything from throw pillows to hand-crafted ceramics. And inside, it’s not just small decorative items, Steven Alan collaborated with designer Jason Pickens to design furniture pieces like made-to-order sofas and small tables. The store is packed with great finds! See below for our designers’ favorites from Steven Alan.

Granite Bookends

We’ve already established that we go gaga for triangles – both creating triangular design patterns and actually using triangles in design. These hefty granite bookends have been machine-carved from a single piece of granite. They are designed by Field, an American brand that works with a network of designers to create Made in the U.S.A. objects.

Cross Blanket

black and white cross blanket

This large cross blanket is a the perfect way to provide a little graphic touch to a space and is a stylist favorite. Designed by Pia Wallén, this organic cotton blanket is frequently featured in magazines and design blogs. We love it too! In Swedish folk art tradition, the cross is a strong symbol for hope, and it has become a signature motif for Pia Wallén.

Cutting Board

This Rowan Wood cutting board was designed by Samuji, a creative studio and design house based in Helsinki, Finland that focuses on crafting functional yet timeless and sustainable design.

Glass Watering Bulb

Also made by Finnish design firm Samuji, this is the sort of creative object we always seem to uncover at Steven Alan. This is a glass watering bulb — fill it up, and it will slowly and elegantly water your house plants!

Ceramic Bowl

Our designers love the textural quality of these natural glazed stacking bowls. Handmade in New York City by Eric Bonnin Ceramics, each bowl is hand-thrown and then formed into an oval shape . Each piece is one of a kind.

Candle Holder

This simple modern wire candle holder is designed by Shane Schneck, an American-born, Stockholm-based designer whose architecture background is evident in the form-based pieces he creates.

Copper Kettle

Designed in Japan by Sohdo, this copper kettle makes us want to start a tea drinking ritual. It has a wax finish and with age will develop a beautiful amber patina.
