Interior Design Guide

A coffee table is one of the cornerstones of your living room. But how do you know when you’ve found the perfect one? With all the options out there, it can be easy to settle for something sub-par. Have no fear. Our senior designers have selected the coffee tables that you’ll love.

Glass Top

If you’re short on space, then consider opting for a table with a translucent or glass top.  It’ll give you all the functionality of a traditional coffee table, but with a light and airy appearance. In this luxurious transitional formal room, we sourced the Jocelyn Table from Ethan Allan for this exact reason. It comes in a chrome finish, for a sleek and luxurious feel.

Extra Storage

Consider your coffee table as something more than just a giant coaster. In this Westchester family home, the living room had no workable storage options. So we sourced a storage ottoman from Room and Board, and adorned it with a tray. It functions the same way as a coffee table, and when the family needs to access their storage, they can easily move the tray to another surface.

Balance is Key

A coffee table is a great way to create a textured contrast in your living room. The living room in this SoHo duplex was full of angular features—a square sectional, square pillows, and square frames. And so to create a natural contrast, we sourced this stone-shaped table from Phillips Collection. It balances out the room’s more angular features and lends the space a luxurious sheen.

Nesting Tables

If you entertain frequently, or if you have a lot of space to cover, then consider a set of nesting coffee tables. You can keep one nestled inside the other until the guests arrive, and then bust out the extra table for additional table space. In this Upper East Side luxury condo, we selected nesting tables from Interlude Home, for a convenient and expandable option.

Why Settle for One Coffee Table?

Can’t decide on one coffee table? Then don’t! If you have a large living room, then it might make sense to go for three smaller coffee tables instead of one regular-sized one. But if you do go for multiple coffee tables, settle for two, or ideally three. And select tables that are all the same shape. In this Upper West Side formal room, we selected three circular coffee tables, including one from Oly Studio, to give this family plenty of places to set their drinks down.

Above and Below

Above all, your coffee table should be functional. So if you find yourself constantly searching for extra table space, then consider an option with tiered solutions. In this comfortable family living room, we selected a square table from Serena and Lily, with dual table tops, for maximal storage.

Fit to Size

When picking out a coffee table, one of the most important considerations is size and proportion. Measure the width of your couch, and then select an a coffee table that’s about a foot shorter. Getting the right size coffee table is particularly important if you’re mixing and matching styles. In this Battery Park loft, we made sure that this art deco coffee table Anthropologie was the perfect size, so that it didn’t clash with the leather chesterfield sofa.
