8 Gorgeous Gyms to Inspire Your Workout

INSPIRATION

New year, new you–right? Perhaps those aspirational New Year’s resolutions and fitness goals are easier said than done, but as design junkies, our strongest motivation to work out comes from admiring utterly beautiful workout spaces. Because if you’re going to sweat, it might as well be in the company of sophisticated spaces and gorgeous views.

Though home gyms are largely functional rooms, there are plenty of ways to introduce creative design elements and touches of drama to these spaces. Since the floorplan has to remain open and clear, the best way to introduce design is by adding detail and texture to the surfaces, whether it’s with a wall decal, a ceiling treatment, or special flooring. Home gyms are a great opportunity to explore architectural detailing. And though they aren’t quite spaces for resting, so to speak, adding a piece of furniture like a chair or bench, along with a pendant light, makes these rooms feel less utilitarian. Incorporating accessories, like a jute basket for towels, wall art, a beautiful set of speakers, or some greenery, helps turn exercise rooms into thoughtfully designed spaces. View eight stunning gym spaces that are inspiring our interior designers, and our workouts.

Striped Walls

A striped wall widens the small space and makes it appear more expansive. Wooden wall pegs and a woven stool add warmth to this exercise room, which is minimal but welcoming. A red rubber ball and bright free weights add a pop of color to the neutral space. Via Architectural Digest.

Architectural Detail

This home gym in Beverly Hills is all about the architectural detail. A barrel-vaulted ceiling features impressive molding and accentuates the expansive arched doorway at the end of the room. Sleek machines with gold finishes, an iron chandelier, and large-scale classical drawings make this an elegant, sophisticated space. A dark wood floor grounds the lofty design. Via Harigian Fitness.

Sleek & Contemporary

Taking its cue from the exercise machine, this contemporary fitness room is spare but beautiful. A Harry Bertoia chair feels right at home in this waterfront space, which is softened by a graphic round area rug and a cozy throw. Two abstract art pieces create the feel of an exhibit space, while a heavily grained wood wall provides subtle texture. Via Ciclotte.

Beach Views

Sure, working out is a lot easier with oceanfront views like the ones in this Malibu gym. A steel-framed glass wall and doors let the outdoors in. Different wood planks were juxtaposed to create visual interest. The rugged gray floors are complemented by the vintage industrial light fixture. An antique cart provides a decorative place to store water, towels and robes. Via Architectural Digest.

Specialty Door

Though this exercise room is rather narrow, a custom garage door opens it up to the terrace outside. A warm wood accent wall is a nice contrast to the glass and steel door, while a black and white photo provides inspiration while elevating the design. Via Zillow.

Dash of Drama

A tented striped ceiling softens this spacious gym and adds a sense of playfulness. The white, gray and red palette is echoed throughout, from the leather seating on the exercise equipment, the tassel trim on the ceiling fabric, and the graphic pattern on the carpeting. Vintage drawings of athletes reference the room’s function in a sophisticated way. Via Architectural Digest.

Minimalist & Bright

This Bunkie pre-fab home in Canada has the air of a meditative studio space. The monochromatic wood interior allows light and views to flood in, and the loft ceiling opens it up. A gas fireplace was built into the wall turns this room into a wilderness retreat. Via Design Milk.

Mountain Views

Peter Marino’s Rocky Mountain fitness room is all about the view. A wide stripe of windows brings in the vista, letting the snowcapped mountains dominate the design. Light wood planks line the wall to introduce the home’s cabin-like scheme into the room. A dark glass window opens up the space and offers views into the indoor pool. Via Architectural Digest.
