A Flexible Formal Room for an Upper West Side Family

New York, NY

When our client approached us about redesigning the living room in her family’s Upper West Side apartment, her goals were to revamp the room, bring in brighter colors, and give the space a more modern feel. When we arrived, the room was dominated by two couches that were too large for the space, and the walls were painted a dark beige. The room received little natural light, and had a dark, cavernous vibe: exactly what our client did not want for her family. The space functions as both a formal room, and as a media room, so the final result needed to be suitable for hosting guests, while also being comfortable enough for a family movie night.

The first thing we did was paint the room in a monochromatic grey-on-white scheme. In addition to giving the original molding a more modern feel, it significantly brightened the room. We also sourced a highly reflective silk-wool rug from ABC Home, which considerably brightened the space as well.

One of the reasons that our client chose to work with Decor Aid was because she was going to be purchasing new couches, and wanted to take advantage of the wholesale discounts that we pass on to our clients. After brightening the living room with a new rug and paint scheme, we established a neutral color palette by purchasing two grey couches from Edward Ferrel + Lewis Mittman, along with monochromatic lampshades from Y Lighting.

To contrast the dominating greys and whites, we took inspiration from our client’s existing art pieces, and added accent pillows, trays, and decorative objects that matched the colors of these paintings. We also sourced a lucite console from Interlude Home, for a contemporary touch.

The finishing touches included a triplet of circular coffee tables from Oly Studio, and a circular mirror, which contrasted with the more angular elements of the room. The lasting effect is an updated and modern, yet colorful and comfortable multipurpose living room for this vibrant family of four.
