The Decor Aid Guide to Summer Houseplants

Interior Design Guide

We love our houseplants. They liven up our homes, refresh the air we breathe and give us city-dwellers a needed dose of nature. But selecting houseplants is like selecting decor for any other area of your home. Our senior designers have these tips for adding plants to your home this summer.

In the Kitchen

Who says that houseplants are purely decorative? If you’re looking for an incentive to stay in and cook, consider adding some spice plants to the kitchen. Rosemary, lavender, basil, parsley, lemon balm, lemon grass, mint, oregano and cilantro are all low-maintenance, tasty options.

In the Bathroom

If you’re looking to freshen up your bathroom, consider adding some eucalyptus plants. When exposed to steam, eucalyptus will release a mild fragrance that helps clear the sinuses. They’re great for battling seasonal allergies, and will make showering even more enjoyable.

For the Bedroom

If you’re looking for a natural air cleaner, consider placing houseplants in the bedroom. We’re fond of the snake plant, which is also known as the mother-in-law’s tongue. It’s excellent at removing toxins from the air, and looks great in chic, minimalist planters.

Living Plant Wall

Like virtually every form of decor, houseplants take up precious floor or table space. That’s why we love the hanging wall plant. And if you also happen to be shopping for wall art, you can kill two birds with one stone. Check out how we got the living plant wall look in this penthouse overlooking Central Park West.

New Planters

Why bother with houseplants if you aren’t getting some chic planters? While there are a million stylish planters out there, we’re particularly fond of these pieces designed by Eric Trine. Handmade in his Los Angeles studio, these geometric pieces come in a variety of colors, and are great for adding a summery vibe.

Self-Watering Planters

If you forget to water your plants now and again, then consider getting a self-watering planter. Fill it up once in a while, and the planter will do the rest. We’re a fan of this 3-piece set from ikea. With a ceramic frame and an elevated wire base, it’s perfect for getting a laid back, modern summer look.

Succulents

If you’re looking for ways to keep your houseplants alive, then consider plants that are easier to maintain than the usual fiddle leaf fig. And if you’re looking for summery options to add to the home, consider adding some succulents. They’re durable, resilient and will add a chic desert vibe to your home.

In the Corner

Corners are one of the most difficult spaces in the home to decorate. While there isn’t quite enough room for an extra piece of furniture, it’s also unwise to leave the space completely bare. If you want to add a large houseplant to your home, then consider placing them in an underused corner. In the dining room of the Westchester family home, we placed fiddle leaf fig plants in opposing corners. They add a dash of greenery, without disrupting the flow of this chic family home.
