Interior Design Guide: A Masterful Master Bedroom

You spend a third of your life sleeping. Even if you aren’t conscious of your surroundings, it’s important to have a soothing and relaxing master bedroom that reflects your personal style. So rest easy, and follow our guide to get the look you want for your master bedroom.

Symmetry

When designing a master bedroom, it’s important to try and create a serene, comforting, and relaxing environment. And one of the easiest ways to do this is to create symmetry in your master bedroom. In this Four Seasons luxury condo, we framed the bed with symmetrical nightstands, and filled the room with pairs of objects, so that our client can wake up in a balanced, serene environment.

Canopy Bedframe

Your bed is the centerpiece of your master bedroom. So don’t be afraid to pick out a frame that makes a statement. If you have the ceiling height consider opting for a canopy bed frame. In this penthouse overlooking Central Park West, we sourced a two-tone canopy bed frame from Desiron for a bold, modern statement.

Art

Every room in your home should have at least one piece of art, and your master bedroom is no exception. Don’t go for anything to vivid or distracting, but pick something such as a monochromatic painting, or a black-and-white photograph. In this SoHo Duplex, we placed a framed black-and-white image above the bed, for a chic look that’s consistent with the rest of the room.

Don’t Skimp On Pillows

Above all, your master bedroom should be a comfortable place to sleep. So whether it’s a baker’s dozen of pillows or a second duvet, go for it. In this Sag Harbor loft, we made sure the master bed had plenty of pillows. Grey pillows, small pillows, big pillows, white pillows: whatever it takes, just make your bed as comfortable as possible.

Storage

Luxury furniture and plush bedding isn’t all you need for a masterful master bedroom. Clutter and clothes also need to be dealt with. So make sure that you have plenty of storage for knick-knacks and your wardrobe. In this Upper East Side luxury condo, we installed custom, built-in cabinets, that takes the place of a standard armoire.

Neutral Colors

We love a colorful home. But the bedroom is a place for tranquility and peace. To give your master bedroom a calm and serene environment, use a combination of neutral and washed out colors. It’s the perfect way to begin and end your day.

Area Rug

When you jump out of bed in the morning, give your feet something plush and comfortable to land on. For all of our master bedrooms, we incorporate a large area rug, and frame it around the bed. It’ll highlight the center of your room, and give your space some extra comfort too.

Give Yourself a Bit of Space

If you live in a studio apartment, then you may be wondering how to sequester your sleeping area from the rest of your home. One of the easiest ways is to use a wall divider, or even a large piece of furniture. In this chic, rustic loft overlooking Union Square, we used a bookshelf to seperate the bed from the dining area, to further distinguish each area of the open-layout loft.
