A Colorful and Sophisticated Mid-Century Apartment for a Family of Four

New York

Transforming your rental apartment into a bona fide home can be an arduous process. Our clients, a family of four, were having this exact problem with their Upper East Side apartment. They wanted a cohesive, functional and beautiful space without violating the terms of their lease agreement. So they reached out to Decor Aid, and tasked us with creating a colorful and sophisticated mid-century home.

We started the redesign by giving the apartment a fresh coat of paint. To create a soothing and serene environment, we selected a collection of soft greys, whites and blues to adorn the home. For pops of color, we selected removable wall accents, including wallpaper from Tempaper, and a custom-fabricated reclaimed wood built-in.

In the redesign process, the parents opted to swap bedrooms with their growing kids. And so a significant part of the redesign was creating functional bedroom spaces for the entire family.

In the kids’ bedroom, we selected two bed frames with storage options, which significantly freed up the room. There wasn’t enough space for two freestanding desks, so we installed a wall-mounted unit, which also functions as a nightstand for both of the beds.

In the new master bedroom, we custom fabricated a built-in storage console, which doubles as a media console and a closet.

Most of the existing furniture in the apartment was purchased when the kids were newborns, and so we sourced entirely new pieces, to get the mid-century look that our clients desired. In the living room, we flanked a Room & Board sectional with side tables from Dot & Bo. A chartreuse armchair from ABC Home adds a dash of color.

Our clients love to exhibit decorative wares from their travels. And so the apartment’s finishing touches included a set of solid teak wood consoles, which give our clients a set of stylish storage options.
