A Cramped Duplex Becomes a Chic Family HomeNew York, NY
Having a family and a well-designed home can often feel contradictory. Our clients, a family of five living alongside Riverside Drive, faced this exact predicament. Their duplex hadn’t been redesigned since the kids were born, and the family was starting to outgrow their current space. So they reached out to Decor Aid, and tasked us with creating an airy and contemporary home that could evolve with their family in the coming years.
When we arrived at the space, we found that the apartment had been sectioned off into smaller rooms, with the kids’ rooms crowding out picturesque views of the Hudson River. The entire home felt cavernous and claustrophobic: the exact opposite vibe of what our clients desired. To start, we reworked the entire floor plan, with the goal of creating spaces where everyone could hang out as a family. By demolishing several downstairs walls, we opened up the floor plan, which allowed us to create two distinct common spaces: a living room where the family could gather around the television, and a library nook, for reading.
Custom, built-in wall units were fabricated for the living room and library, providing plenty of storage options. To demarcate the living room, we sourced a colorful, abstract area rug from Horchow, which frames a sectional from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams; a circular jute rug gives the library a casual, yet refined feel. A bench from Lillian August straddles the two areas, and provides a flexible seating option for either space.
With Riverside Park just steps away from their front door, our clients wanted to incorporate natural elements into their design scheme, and so we placed a live-edge wood coffee table in the living room. Both the coffee table and the bench feature lucite legs, giving the space a light and airy feel.
To create a continuum throughout the duplex, we sourced coordinating Jonathan Adler light fixtures, including a dramatic tubular chandelier for the dining room. The final result is a contemporary and stylish space that this family can call home for years to come.
